Actively protect lone workers ensuring that help is on the way when something goes wrong

Summary

DocBoss simplifies, automatize and optimizes document control in large engineering projects.

This is necessary for workers performing their daily tasks that require exposure to any sort of risk. Also, it is a requirement for companies to prevent negligence, reduce insurance premiums while causing minimum impact on existing workflows and above all, support their workforce.

Results
It has been amazing being able to see a company starting from the ground up and consolidating in multiple industries. The design has been an important part of this success story.

My role
Product design for mobile, web and IoT devices. I also made the illustrations and animations used in this use case.

Introduction

Design thinking for mobile network testing. 

In 2014 OnGuard, originally branded as Sens-net, started operations. The company saw an opportunity with the new Working Alone law OHS Code part 280 taking place in Alberta.

This law helps ensure that steps are taken by employers and employees to enhance the safety of those working alone by minimizing or eliminating risks, providing a means of communicating an emergency situation to a capable responder and contacting the worker at appropriate routine intervals to assess or confirm his wellness.

Value proposition

The OnGuard worker safety solution is designed to monitor employee safety 24 hours a day through the use of mainstream or specialized mobile devices.

OnGuard is designed to monitor, record and report employee locations, facilitate simplified employee check-in at predetermined times, remind an employee they are required to check-in, detect an employee in a Man Down situation and allow an employee to summon help in an emergency situation.

Discovery

When user pains could be life-threatening

At the beginning of the project, it mainly focused on Oil&Gas workers in remote areas of Alberta.

Understand user pains

Oil & Gas lone workers risk is an everyday concern.  It’s a fact of life for thousands of workers in the oil and gas industry that remote workers will be driving hundreds of miles weekly on back roads in rural areas to work in hazardous areas with dangerous equipment like pump jacks. Intrinsic risks are always present and even when risk assessment, training, and best practices are a high priority for companies, there is a real ever-present possibility that some :

1. John has an accident
John slipped and fell while working alone in a remote hazardous location

2. An alert is triggered
John’s ultra-rugged and Intrinsically Safe Sonim handset easily survived the fall and remained ready to automatically call for help

3. John needs help
John hit hard and was unresponsive. Advanced sensing in the phone had registered free fall and impact. Details and location data were transmitted to the Emergency Response Center via SonimProtect.

4. Dave gets notice
John’s guardian Dave got the alarm message instantly on his Sonim and attempted to speak to John but John remained unresponsive

5. ERC is alerted
Anna at the Emergency Response Center also received the alarm immediately and attempts to establish voice communication with John but still no response. The event is escalated to EMERGENCY and response teams are activated with full details.

6. Finding John
Anna and her ERC team coordinate the rescue efforts with the nearest response team and help is on the way knowing the nature of the fall and the location. The nearest medical facility has also been put on alert.

7. The rescue
Paramedics arrived at the scene, they received constant updates about John’s location, status and medical background. They also were informed about potential risks in the proximity.

8. Happy ending
John now is recovering at the hospital. Supervisors are informed and able to effectively inform John’s family.

After understanding the needs of these particular workers, we started matching the power-story with other verticals, like construction workers.
